The 2 days off we took in Bosteri were worthwhile. After our unwanted break in the “sanatorium” the weather got cold, but it was sunny and beautiful again. We have a last breakfast at the hotel, this time in our room, as we do not want to leave too late. We are happy to pack our bikes and pedal again. We enjoy the ride along the lake, look at the white snowy mountains and the coloured trees and allees. We are crossing small villages that look like ghost villages, all shops are closed and...

Bishkek is another big city with many buildings dating back to the Sowjet times. We don’t do much of sightseeing; the grey and rainy wether is not really inviting to stroll through the city. In a big shopping center we update ourselves for the continuation of our last bit of journey: we buy some additional windstopper gloves in a sports shop. We spend two evenings with a nice German couple, Ursula and Fritjof, whom we meet in our hotel. We go out and have a nice dinner in a Japanese...

Within one week we passed 3 countries. We left Usbekistan, travelled through a small part of Kasachstan and moved on to Kirgistan. At the border Usbekistan/Kasachstan we got a privileged treatement. When arriving there we noticed a long queue and were wondering how we would be able to cross the border with our bikes. Fortunately an officer waved us to pass on the other side of the fence, bypassing the whole queue. We showed our passports and were directly guided to the passport control. We...

We did not want to leave Uzbekistan without visiting Kivah. Kivah is in the North West of Uzbekistan in the middle of the desert, not exactly on our planned bike route. We decided for the easiest solution - to fly there. We left Taschkent on the 20.9 with the 7 o’clock plane to Urgench. From there we reached Kivah after a 30’ ride with the taxi. We had two days for sightseeing before we returned the next day in the evening to Taschkent. From Urgench to Kivah, a distance of 30Km, there is a...

On the 13th of September we leave not too late as we plan to ride around 100km. It is the first time since a long time that we put on the longsleeve shirts and jackets; the temperatures suddenly have decreased. Is that the beginning of autumn? During the day the temperatures are still like summer. The distance to Taschkent is 335km depending on the headwind we make it in 3 to 4 days. The first day continues with wind and slow mileage, but we have time, it is not comparable to Turkmenistan. We...

We stay in a small family hotel in the Russian quarter of Samarkand. In the courtyard there is a small pool and a huge pear tree. We enjoy the possibility to sit in the garden and drink tea or a glass of wine. In the late afternoon, after we have relaxed a bit, we start to explore Samarkand. The distances are much longer than in Buchara. First we visit the Amir-Timur Mausoleum. We already can see the blue cupolas from far away shining in the nice evening light. The poet Alisher Navoi shall have...

We don’t’ face any problems crossing the border, but it takes time. The Turkmen officers are aving their lunch break when we arrive. We already push our bikes into the building, sit down and wait. Finally it looks as things begin to move. We show our passoirt as wekk as the hotelbill of Mary. As we had told them when entering the country that we would spend one night in the hotel in Mary, we had to prove it. We get the exit stamp and are asked to unpack our biciyle. Each and every piece of...

Let’s get one thing straight right off: to cross Turkmenistan we only got a 5 day transit visa. It is more than other tourists received. Some didn’t even get a visa for Turkmenistan, others got it only for 3 days. Considering this we were lucky! Nevertheless, it gives us only 5 days to cross the 500km of desert! The weatherforecast is not in favour of us. It will be sunny all the time, which is good, but temperatures will be around 40°C together with strong headwinds! That’s going to be...

We spend the last two days in Mashhad to do some shopping as for the next couple of days there won’t be many possibilities to do so. Our shopping list is not that long: some dried fruits, fresh fruits and vegetable, coffe, cookies, noodles and some other things. What we will need most is water: we will be crossing the desert and moreover we will be camping. Markus and I are a bit nervous and ask ourselves how fast we will get forward and how fit we are after having had a biking break for some...

Our day off was very quiet; we did not move a lot and spent most of the time laying on our blanket in the park behind the hotel. On a day like this I often have a bad feeling because I do nothing…at least we went shopping. As we planned to leave at 6am the next morning, we bought bread, fruits, cheese and honey for a decent breakfast. The melody of the alarm clock woke us up at 5am. How nice it would have been to turn around in bed again, but we did not want to bike in the heat. Soon were...
